A Research & Feasibility Initiative by Voice of BME – Trafford

Voice of BME – Trafford is proud to lead Perfect Looks & Healthy Hearts – Trafford, a community-focused research project exploring whether  barber shops, hairdressers, and beauty salons can play a role in supporting blood pressure awareness and early prevention initiatives within Trafford communities.
This project has been developed in response to growing concerns around health inequalities and the increasing impact of hypertension and cardiovascular disease within communities experiencing social deprivation, particularly in Old Trafford and Stretford.

Why This Project Matters

High blood pressure (hypertension) is often called the “silent killer” because many people do not realise they have it until serious health complications occur. Early detection and prevention are essential in reducing avoidable illnesses such as strokes, heart disease, and
other cardiovascular conditions.
Research from across the UK and internationally has shown that trusted community spaces such as barber shops and salons can successfully engage people who may not regularly access traditional healthcare services.
Through this project, we aim to understand w hether a similar model could work effectively and sustainably within Trafford communities.

What the Project Will Do
This is a research and feasibility study. The project will not provide clinical blood pressure checks during this phase.
Instead, we will explore:

• Whether local barber shops, hairdressers, and beauty salons would be willing to participate in future health initiatives
• What training and support would be required
• Technology and equipment considerations
• Data protection and confidentiality requirements
• Community perceptions and engagement opportunities
• Long-term sustainability and cost-effectiveness
• Potential referral pathways into GP surgeries, pharmacies, and health services

The findings will help Trafford’s Population Health Management Group make informed decisions about future community health interventions.
